Reading and Writing Task #13:

As a society I don’t think that here in Puerto Rico we have become a society where shooting is the norm. But I know that in the states it happens a lot and that scares me, when I visit the states that is one of the things I worry about. I fully believe that shootings are the main cause of deaths in children, you just need to see the shootings that have already passed in the few months of this year. I think all the gun violence comes from the fact that it is backed up by the second amendment. Because of this people think that they can do whatever they want, that shouldn’t be the case. It can be prevented by proper gun laws and teaching children that violence is not the solution for people’s frustrations. It shows people that there are other ways of realizing their daily stress without putting others in danger.

Special Assessment: “Lessons from Silent Spring for Controlling Disease”

The video was about the mosquito, and this woman called Rachel Carson who fought against DDT, a popular insecticide at the time because of its bad effects on human life. Rachel was just saying what they would’ve already known had they looked for them, not just use an insecticide on everyone and everything. But since she was a woman contradicting a man for only telling the truth, she was called a murder. She was called wrong, insulted by newspapers and people. A true disgrace to someone who is just trying to help. The American environmental movement was spread because of the growth after the insecticide was banned.

The man who said that Rachel Carson was a Murder was a news outlet called Glenn Beck. You can note that when he’s talking, he’s talking below her acting as if she isn’t a scientist who knows what she’s doing just because she is a woman. The hidden harm in DTD and other insecticides was that yes it was used for insects, but when used for people, it was very bad for their health and it caused problems in the years that they will grow up after that. When this was discovered, it was fought against, and eventually banned making it safer, but having a rise in cases of malaria. The mosquito continues to adapt. I wouldn’t say maybe on a yearly couple your basis, given that it gets used to what is against it it knows how to move and how to wait for the door to open to enter. Mosquitoes are adaptable creatures.

I These are creatures that are very dangerous and you wouldn’t think that because they’re very small but they carry many big varieties of diseases on a yearly, weekly, and daily basis. Time magazine called her book an emotionally insecure outburst. All this, just because she was a woman speaking the truth, it was very hard for Rachel time that she came out with this to be accepted and heard. It is seen still in society just because you are a certain type, maybe your race, maybe your gender will play a role in how people judge you and how people listen to you, just because you look some way people decided that’s good enough to criticize. It shouldn’t be that way, in an ideal world it wouldn’t be that way, but it’s not an ideal world. I think we’re very far away from being fair and it’s something that as a world and society we have to work on and educate ourselves on. Otherwise, we’re not really changing from the time that she was in.

Spring Break:

The best time I had on spring break was spent with my family, we usually take the time to tour around the island and have quality time as a family. A time I remember was last year, I stayed at my grandparents house with my sister because my parents went on a vacation. I like spring break in general because I get to recharge and take a minute to relax from everyday life.

Reading and Writing Task #12: “Pro and Con: Banned Books”

Personally I don’t believe books should be banned. If the language or context is considered bad for children then just put it in the adults section and educate the children about why these things shout be said and such. But banning books because they talk about “uncomfortable” topic I find to be ridiculous. Growing up I was encouraged to read books that are for older people, but I was explained the context of the time that they were written in. If the had to do with race, I was told why now the opinions they have are not correct. I believe that it’s not right to ban books, if we take the time to explain the books it would be easier, and of course parents can choose to restrict certain books if they find it correct but to entirely ban them to every person because a couple don’t like them is ridiculous.

Assessment: #10 Facts and fake news: How to tell the difference

This article talks about how during the pandemic there was a lot of misinformation going around and people would believe them. Then it tells us how we can tell the difference between fake news and factual news. First it tells us to look past the title and to look past our own biases because that can make us see the news as truthful instead of analyzing it instead. It also tells us to check the source of the information which is something we have to do for many works, we have to make sure we are sure of the information we are writing about. A couple of fake news outlets can be links ending in .com and .yahoo, these are examples of fake news that are not checked by true sources. A couple of factual links can be .org and .Edu, these are places that are usually more trustworthy given they are pages that are researched and known as good for information.
